The big day may have come and gone, but keep in touch as we’re always up to something new and exciting.
Check out this message of good luck to all of our delegates from Governor Katie Hobbs this year!
It is my highest honor to extend you an invitation to the 15th Annual SunMUN conference at the Arizona State University Tempe campus on November 15-16, 2024. This will be our most ambitious session yet: for the first time, we will welcome college-level delegations! The team is hard at work crafting this experience, and we look forward to announcing interesting workshops, socials, guest speakers and more in the months to come. For more information about the conference and to register your delegation in the coming months as enrollment opens, please visit www.SunMUN.info.
I’m Liam Nelson, I will hold the privilege of serving as your Secretary-General for SunMUN 15! I’m pursuing degrees in Global Studies, History, and Japanese Language and will graduate in May of 2025. The experiences and connections I made through eight years of Model UN inspired me to seek a degree and career in connecting the world through diplomacy, in whatever means that may take form. Student programs and exchanges are the most friendly, beneficial ways that countries interact; even countries that are “enemies” engage in educational exchange. In this role, Model UN plays an underrecognized and outsized role in building global citizenship, awareness, and connections. I am thrilled to help contribute to these connections through my role as Secretary-General, and I sincerely hope delegates will also seize this opportunity!
For anybody that’s kept with the news lately, it’s clear that the international system is changing wildly and quickly. So, our theme for SunMUN 15 is “New Norms for a New World.” As global power competition shifts, as technology disrupts every traditional facet of statehood, statecraft, and diplomacy, and as humans explore new frontiers and new worlds, the global community, the UN, and the way that countries interact with each other, will continue to revolutionize.
Our wonderful team has been hard at work crafting twelve committees–nine for high school delegations and three for college delegations–that accompany and investigate these changes. Of course, the staples like the General Assembly, Security Council, and ECOSOC will make their return. New and exciting opportunities also await delegates. The critically acclaimed Historical Joint Crisis committee will make a return, now with a focus on 1850’s Eastern Europe. Other institutions, such as the International Court of Justice and the European Union, will feature in their very own committees. Finally, delegates will have a totally new committee for the western U.S. MUN circuit, where they will conduct diplomacy through their very own “custom” country in the new “Do You Want to Build a Nation” committee. Of course, there are many more details for these committees, so please take a look at our website and stay tuned for further newsletters for more information!
My excitement to see everyone for an incredible 15th SunMUN can’t be understated!
My sincere thanks,
Liam Nelson
