The big day may have come and gone, but keep in touch as we’re always up to something new and exciting.
Check out this message of good luck to all of our delegates from Governor Katie Hobbs this year!
It is my greatest honor and privilege to formally invite you all to the 14th Session of our Annual SunMUN High School Conference to be held on November 17-18, 2023 at Arizona State University. Our Model UN team at ASU has been working passionately and diligently for the past year to bring you an exciting version of our conference. This year, we are featuring training workshops, exciting guest speakers, feedback sessions, unique committees, socials, and more. You can register today at our website: https://sunmun.info/.
For those who are new to our conference or may not know me, I will briefly introduce myself as well. My name is Ritisha Das, and I am a senior at Barrett Honors College, ASU. I have enjoyed MUN for the last six years of my life, my first conference actually being the 2018 ASU Conference as a high school sophomore. And while my background is in mechanical engineering and mathematics, I am a firm believer in the value of interdisciplinary learning and in MUN, my passion for international relations and politics has flourished. Through MUN, I have explored the world, crafted the art of diplomacy, and formed lasting connections with peers. Alongside my incredible officer team, we led the complete post-pandemic reconstruction of our MUN team here at ASU in 2021, navigating hybrid conferences, attending remote collegiate conferences, and more! As a leader, delegate, and student, I have learned so much over the last few years and it is with this vigor, I am proud to bring you 2023 SunMUN.
This year’s theme “Balancing Global Rights and Responsibilities” highlights the profound volatility of global affairs and how that weighs against the responsibility of member states to protect their citizens while promoting justice for all in the international community. Today, war and conflict are as prevalent as ever.
But in the pursuit of stability, attention to advancing rights for minority groups, combating environmental crises, and building equitable infrastructure is dwindling. Nations are at a loss on how to prioritize these different agendas while maintaining global security. SunMUN hopes to tackle these complex issues in its seven committees.
General Assembly will confront “International Water Rights”, “LGTBQ+ Rights in MENA”, and “Denuclearization”. The UN Environment Program addresses “E-Waste Disposal”, “Conflict Effects on the Environment”, and “Popular Inclusion in Environmental Governance”. The Economic and Social Council prioritizes “Mitigating Exploitation of the Developing World”, “Food Trade Protectionism (specific to the Black Sea Grain Initiative)” and “Implementing the Sendai Framework”. The Human Rights Council deals with the “Political Independence of Judicial Branches”, “Access to Technology & Information”, and “Freedom of Press & Independent Media”. The Security Council will determine their agenda after voting during the conference and will be double-delegated to encourage partnership. We will also be featuring a non-crisis double-delegated Historical committee that will focus on the “First All-Russian Congress of Soviets” and a Joint Crisis Historical Committee taking place in “1894- The End of the Gilded Age”. These latter committees are meant to diversify the content at our conference, but also allow delegates to experience a different kind of fun MUN!
We also want to note our team has worked hard to construct our conference to ensure all students with any level of experience can enjoy and participate in all committees at SunMUN. So, we encourage schools to attend with all of their novice delegates as well! With that in mind, we are truly looking forward to welcoming you all to SunMUN 2023 this November! Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or require any additional information.
Thank you so much.
Warm regards,
Ritisha Das
